CKCSC, USA CODE OF ETHICS HIGHLIGHTS

Every breeder/member of the CKCSC, USA must sign the Code of Ethics and is required to abide by this Code. The club’s Code of Ethics was written many years ago for the good of the dogs, not the breeders. It starts out by stating: “I believe that the welfare of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed is of paramount importance. It supersedes any other commitment to Cavaliers, whether that be personal, competitive or financial”.

Among other things, it requires CKCSC breeders to provide new puppy buyers with:

  • Feeding Instructions
  • Written medical records to include immunizations and wormings, if any
  • A recent certificate of health signed by a licensed veterinarian
  • Pedigree
  • Membership Application Form
  • Copy of the Code of Ethics

The Code of Ethics also requires breeders to keep their puppies to a minimum of 8 weeks, with 10 – 12 weeks being the recommended age, before allowing a Cavalier puppy to leave the litter and its mother. Keep in mind that a Cavalier is a puppy for 2 years! The complete Code of Ethics is a document you might want to read as you consider from which breeder you would like to purchase your puppy. It gives you an account of what you should expect to receive from the breeder when you pick up your puppy and after you take your puppy home.
